Today kicks off the North Korea Freedom Week (NKFW), which was started for the specific purpose of promoting the freedom, human rights, and dignity of the North Korean people. My friend, Ann Buwalda, who heads the Jubilee Campaign organization, says this is significant year because it is the first time the NKFW week has been held outside of Washington, D.C. This week, it is being held in Seoul, South Korea. She writes:
NKFW began in 2004 to raise the plight of North Koreans and the obstacles to their freedom. North Korean refugees continue to suffer at the hands of the "great leader" Kim Jong-Il, but many are able to see the light through programs like the balloon launches, which send information or $1 bills to help North Koreans in the prison camps. We hope you will show your support this year by praying with us.
Ephesians 4:1 reminds us to "live a life worthy of the calling you have received." Through your prayers and support, we will see God set the captives free someday!
The NKFW coalition says an estimated 3 million North Koreans have perished under North Korea's brutal dictatorial regime since the mid-1990s. Families continue to starve to death as the North Korean government withholds food rations to entire regions of the nation. The government arbitrarily detains, tortures, and executes its citizens, including children, in a large network of concentration camps.
Additionally, Open Doors USA says North Korea is number one on its list of most difficult nations for Christians, a ranking it has held since 2002. To learn more about what our fellow believers suffer in North Korea, watch the video below from Open Doors. You can also visit Open Doors' website to download a prayer guide.
