As we enter Easter Week, it's fitting to consider the charge given by Jesus to His disciples after His resurrection. We often call it The Great Commission:
Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:16-20, emphasis added)
It's clear in the gospels that it's Jesus who does the calling. He draws His followers. But He asks us to participate in making those followers fruitful. This process is called discipleship, and in my experience it's not just a one-way process. When we get involved in the lives of newer Christ-followers, we share what we know about Jesus and we are edified and strengthened, too.
Recently at my church, we were asked to stand if we wanted to be discipled. And then we were asked to stand if we wanted to help disciple others. To be honest, it was an awkward moment on both sides. I'm thankful for the honesty of those who stood up. But even when the desire is there, it can be challenging to find materials that are flexible for the individual life circumstances and time constraints for both people. Most importantly, you want to find materials that help those being discipled to dig into God's Word for themselves. You don't want to be creating your own disciples. You want them to be Jesus' disciples.
That's why I think a new tool from Downline Ministries may be helpful. I haven't had time to explore all of it, but what I've seen so far seems to be exceedingly useful. The idea behind the Downline Builder is to create an online curriculum that is customizable for personal or small group discipleship around the life lessons or Bible teaching that are needed by those specific individuals. It makes it very easy to get started because you can select the topics you need for the time you have available and you get a complete student/leader curriculum in PDF form. (Downline Ministries is an evangelical and inter-denominational ministry based in Memphis, TN. They wrote the curriculum in such a way "as to present what the Bible affirms and leave a more nuanced interpretation in the hands of the discipler, who can contextualize to his or her particular denominational beliefs.")
Below you will find a great introductory video about the Downline Builder, as well as a link to video commentary from yours truly--filmed by Downline Ministries a few months ago after I saw a demo. I hope you find this to be a helpful resource for your participation in The Great Commission!
P.S. Downline filmed this late one evening after I had given two full seminars. I'm fortunate I could string together any verbiage. Unfortunately, I didn't catch that I referenced the great commandment, not the great commission. Close in sound, but not quite the point I wanted to make. It's good to be humbled via video! ha ha
